Review of Dancer in the Dark (2000) by Rasa P — 04 Nov 2009
This won't be everyone's cup of tea, but if it is, you'll be flattened.
Bjork plays a Czech immigrant who's losing her eyesight, and attempting to pay for her son's eye operation.
Her life is so shitty that she imagines herself in a Hollywood musical, because according to her "nothing bad ever happens in a musical".
This movie was like several sustained punches to the balls. By the end, I was ruined.
I haven't seen a legitimate Dogme95 movie, but Lars von Trier (one of the creators) seems to be intentionally breaking all of his established rules in making this, so... That's good.
Because fuck Dogme95.
Anyway, this is the best musical I've ever seen, and probably the most heartbreaking movie I've ever seen.
Watch at your own tear duct discretion.
