Review of Dahmer (2002) by Ni K — 14 May 2010
Jeremy Renner looks uncanny like Dahmer which is the biggest attraction to this movie. Rather than a play by play of Dahmer's killings, this movie only gives up a small glimpse at the murders. A few mutalations and a few dead bodies, but nothing as graphic as the last CSI episode.
No scenes or mention of eating the people's flesh either. This is a toned down version because we somewhat have to like Dahmer, enough to get through the movie. He was a killer and the movie has no skeletons in the closet from childhood that led to it, probably because Dahmer's past is known by anyone wanting to see this movie.
The plot basically involves Dahmer hooking up with two men over a three day period, the first one he drugs and drills into the head. The second one, he shares a few drinks and..., we don't know if he wanted to kill him or have sex with him or both.
All the while, we see flashbacks leading up to the first victim by Dahmer which might have been stopped if some cop had done his job and arrested Dahmer for DUI. Still, Renner tries to draw some sympathy by portraying Dahmer as a loner and more or less, confused by his own sexuality and life.
But the movie doesn't really pop. The pace involving the second male is slow and the ending is rather abrupt.
