Review of Dagon (2001) by Sol H — 17 Apr 2011
I was looking hugely forwards to this because I read Dagon and was fascinated as to how it might be realised on screen. Long story short: it wasn't realised on screen. This is, instead, a bizarre mishmash of several H.P. Lovecraft short stories (Dagon being one of them) that doesn't really do justice to any of them.
I also had high hopes as Stuart Gordon previously directed Re-Animator which is not only a wonderful film, but the only good film based on H.P. Lovecraft's work.
Instead of being a tense, creepy film that draws on the horrors of implication, this is an admittedly tense film that features a load of fish-people running around and making stupid noises. It's a bit too ridiculous to take seriously and it feels very cheap at times. A true B-movie, but not one that holds up to scrutiny.
Hopefully Guillermo Del Toro will get his At the Mountains of Madness adaptation greenlit somewhere so that we can enjoy some Lovecraft done right.
4/10.
