Review of Cutter's Way (1981) by Pete N — 16 Dec 2007
Excellent, little-known neo-noir from the early 1980's that seems at points to be an extremely dark dry run for The Big Lebowski, with Bridges as a young dude, John Heard as a one-eyed, one-armed limping Walter Sobchak, and a real serial murderer as the antagonist.
Bridges is great and seemingly effortless as a motiveless layabout, and Heard is a revelation as the caustic, aggrieved Viet Nam vet who pursues a billionaire killer to the bitter end...and, technically, beyond.
A fitting companion to films like Chinatown and Blood Simple, told with narrative economy and a great deal of sympathy for its screwed-up but strangely heroic duo.
