Review of Cutter's Way (1981) by Will R — 13 Oct 2009
Okay, so I did a blind rental of this because Jeff Bridges is in it and John Heard wears an eye patch. What I didn't expect was pure, bleak and dirty awesomeness. Sure, it starts off shakey but as Cutter's paranoia grows deeper and Mo's depression gets worse and Jeff Bridges' playboy Richard Bone shrugs it all off the film picks up a certain loneliness to it.
It all climaxed for me in the scene where Richard has sex with Mo, Cutter's wife and she starts to cry but he keeps going. John Heard sinks his teeth into his role and comes out shining as the paranoid Vietnam vet.
Jeff Bridges proves he's one of the best. Lisa Eichorn is beautiful. The score could've been too much but it's sparse and sad enough to work. And the ending was perfect. Fuck, I love raw shit like this that just opens up old wounds.
It's masochistic but whatever, it works.
