Review of Cult of Chucky (2017) by Wayne K — 07 Nov 2017
A profoundly stupid and utterly redundant continuation of a series which, like all horror franchises, shouldn't have gone past the first instalment, Cult Of Chucky takes place in a mental institution.
Having watched the film from start to finish, I think it's safe to say that it's probably also where the script was written. What makes the film so baffling is the fact that Chucky has no decent motivation to be killing people.
In the first one he was trying to get his body back. Here, he's just doing it because he's Chucky, and that's what he does. It's such a flimsy excuse for a premise, and the execution is just as bad.
Why is it so difficult for grown adults to fight a child-sized doll? Much like in The Creeping Terror, most of the victims die through sheer stupidity and inability to flee or defend themselves. Chucky is a tired character, almost self-aware in how pointless he is, going around killing people in increasingly dumb ways for his own amusement rather than any actual purpose.
And you know what they say about never referencing a better movie in your crappy movie? Well here we get nods to One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Silence Of The Lambs, Psycho and several others which you would be much better off watching, rather than wasting a single second on this moronic, screamingly unnecessary drivel.
