Review of Cul-de-sac (1966) by Chad W — 18 Feb 2012
Polanski's film begins more promisingly than it ultimately turns out. Watching these 3 figures which are all a waste of life and ultimate representation of their native countries is enjoyable, for a while.
The film's narrative goes nowhere just like the relationships, bringing Polanski's motive to the fore. Cul-de-Sac plays out like a Bergman-esque French New Wave film, which honestly doesn't sound so great in theory and turns out to be not so great.
Complaints aside, this film really is beautiful and the sound design, or lack there of (Lionel Stander's blaring distorted voice) are the crowning achievements of the entire film.
