Review of Cthulhu (2008) by Kurt W — 01 Nov 2009
I think that the only mistake made with this film was in biting off more than it could chew. It tried to tackle too many things [a coastal cult attempting to precipitate the return of the old gods against a backdrop of nationwide violence, child murder, homophobia] when I feel that if it had stuck with the basic premise of an outcast returning home to find that his father's bizarre cult was doing strange things it would have done the subject matter better justice.
Dagon, another Lovecraft film with a very similar premise achieved excellence through an economy of means. I wish this film would have stuck to its dramatic points and got rid of the more spectacular aspects.
[I feel a spectators edit coming on]. I hate to be negative so I will discuss the strong points. The atmosphere of the film was haunting and captured the Pacific Northwest coast beautifully. The main character was well acted and Tori Spelling.
the only 'known' personage in the film, was entertaining as usual. Jason Cottle was quite good in the lead as well. I was disappointed in that I had very high hopes for this film and it just didn't play out in the end.
