Review of Crumb (1995) by Wilson S — 12 Jul 2007
Insight into the warped imagination of cult cartoonist R. Crumb whose, often disturbing, work caught the imagination of the 60s and 70s counter-cultures. The man himself often comes unsympathetically but much of his work captures the spirit of being an outsider in a crazy world, a mix of adolescent lust and jealousy and often downright misogyny much of which goes beyond any satire into simple pornography.
What makes the film so fascinating isn't entirely Crumb himself, it's the revelation that his two brothers are even more terrifyingly twisted than himself - one a manic, borderline rapist artist, the other a dosed up reclusive who it is revealed committed suicide shortly after the films release.
