Review of Crows Zero (2007) by Tsubaki S — 03 Jan 2009
Asian Extreme master Takashi Miike creates one of his most mainstream films with this full-throttle fight movie.
This is not Martial Arts. This is grass roots, bare-knuckle street brawling turned up to 11. Fight after fight after fight after endless fight might squash any redeemable elements in an average movie if not for Miikes skill in genre film making.
Visually striking, charismatic, sharply performed characters, slick camera work, fun, kinetic fight choreography and some real heart make for a very engaging couple of hours.
It certainly LOOKS like it were made from a manga, but it stands on it's own for unique reasons. It's cool. It's fun. it's simply badass and it's got lots of insight wrapped in attitude that youth targeted film in America typically lacks.
This is not the kind of film that could come out of Hollywood and I wonder why? Is American Pie that much better than this action fantasy? I don't think so. Our youth-targeted films are all about T&A and gross-out humour. Hooray. I continue to look over the sea for FUN movies. For every "Iron Man" produced, there seems to be a dozen "Disaster Movie"s. *Sigh* Ah well, I look forward to Crows Zero:2 starting production shortly..
