Review of Crossing Over (2009) by Rachel C — 27 Oct 2009
This wannabe Crash-Bordertown flick offers up a pathetic cast of charactertures of illegal US immigrants from all walks of life: Jim Sturgess as a British Jew turned song writer, Alice Braga as a deported Mexican mother desperate to return for her son, and Alice Eve as an Aussie actress willing to sell her soul for stardom.
There's even a pathetic & sadistic INS supervisor played by Ray Liotta, who is married to Ashley Judd, as an immigration lawyer desperate for a child. While it's great to see Ashley on the big screen again, I wish it was in a better movie.
Sadly the lead, a weak-kneed INS officer played by Harrison Ford, is eclipsed by Cliff Curtis playing a one-dimensional Iranian naturalised citizen turned INS agent and co-conspirator in a murder. This film's pathetic attempt at exploring illegal immigration to the US sticks in the throat and we're forced to cough it up.
