Review of Cross of Iron (1977) by Andrew L — 08 Aug 2007
A dated film and the only mainstream Western film to depict the endless infantry combat that was characteristic of the Eastern Front in WW2. The Eastern front was the premier front of the second world war and destroyed the third Reich. 90% of German military deaths were lost at the hands of the Soviet Union.
As a storylines go, it merely shows a German recon section trying to survive after being ruthlessly sacrificed by their officers to blunt a Soviet offensive. The steretypes of "Good, not nazi German" and the "Bad, nazi German" reappear in this flick.
The prime weakness is the numerous dull scenes and mediocre acting.
