Review of Cross of Iron (1977) by Marcos M — 28 Sep 2012
Social commentary may not be the first thing that comes to mind when discussing World War Two, yet this is what truly sets Cross of Iron apart from the plethora of war cinema. James Coburn flawlessly portrays the ruthless yet struggling Steiner, and even amidst a score of war film stereotypes Sam Peckinpah captures the blood and mire of the Eastern Front with brutal finesse.
While its ending may come off as sudden and confused, at Cross of Iron's heart is the conflict between the working man's soldier and the aristocratic cowardly commander; war's blue and white collars.
