Review of Crimson Tide (1995) by Nick R — 17 Feb 2008
Exciting, stylish yet taut mutiny-on-a-nuclear-submarine thriller, with Gene Hackman in excellent redneck form as the Captain determined to follow out his ambiguous orders, come hell or nuclear armageddon.
Denzel Washington is superb too in the Mr. Christian role, conveying a conflicted military mind rather than outright wet drip. It looks great, and somehow remains highly kinetic despite 90% of the film taking place on the sub itself - very much "Top Gun" meets "Das Boot".
The odd scenes that include crewman debating geeky pop culture references (courtesy of one Mr. Q. Tarantino) jar however and the films geo-political plot (former Soviet republic assumes control of Russian nukes) seems somewhat quaint given the events of the last 8 years.
Regardless, "Crimson Tide" remains one of the better Hollywood blockbusters of the 1990s, amply demonstrating that a film like this can have both brains and brawn without excessive dumbing down.
