Review of Cries and Whispers (1972) by Max F — 08 Jun 2007
Probably Bergman's most ignored masterpiece. And it IS a masterpiece. Full of emotional dread and the haunting pain of mortality, which infects (like a cancer) the tedium of lives of doubt lived within empty spaces.
The four female leads are equally daring and nuanced, making this Bergman's most effective chamber drama. When you think about Cries & Whispers, you see the color red in a crimson shade that speaks volumes and never leaves you.
