Review of Cries and Whispers (1972) by Craig Q — 17 Jul 2008
Sublime and heartbreaking. Silence fills the gaps where no words can be spoken. The haunting cries of the dying, the whispers of the living, the solemnity of tragic circumstance. An existential masterpiece filled with death and despair, but from the darkest hour hope and love survive.
The photography is a lush tapestry. This is Bergman at his apex. The film cuts into me so deep it never fails to choke me up, while simultaneously causing me want to stand up and cheer for the emotions it evokes.
"Cries and Whispers" is truly and irrefutably a work of art on film.
