Review of Cries and Whispers (1972) by Nikan A — 22 Jul 2011
Ingmar Bergman`s direction in "Cries and Whispers" is flawless . He makes the shots and tells the story pellucid . Because he knows how to tell It.
When a woman (Agnes) dying of cancer in turn-of-the century Sweden is visited by her two sisters (Maria and Karin) , long repressed feelings between the siblings rise to the surface.
This story is full of Bergman`s Favorite themes : Relationships , Emotions , Love , Hate , Death , Infidelity and Despair . That`s Why he makes it well-done.
The first thing you can easily feel in the film, is the disappearance of geniality between Characters : Between sisters (Karin and Maria), Parents and Children (Agnes and his mother in her childhood) and husbands and Wives (Maria and Joakim , Karin and Fredrik). Some dialogues are really painful. This distance between characters comes to the film , and it becomes a distance between characters and audience.
In "Cries and Whispers" Bergman makes no mystery , as he did in "Persona" with weird scenes and breathtaking shots. Instead , he adds a red color to his film (I mean to the characters dresses , rooms , walls and background) and he invites you to brilliant design of scenes and costumes.
The story is told slowly as other family dramas. With Ingrid Thulin (as Karin) , Liv Ullmann (as Maria) and Kari Sylwan `s Performances and a brilliant cinematography , Ingmar Bergman makes one of his most depressing works.
