After a matinee viewing of the latest entry in the evolving, fictional Rocky Balboa universe, I'm submitting my application for president of the Michael B. Jordan fan club. The dynamic actor nails all the notes as Apollo Creed's fist-swinging son Adonis, even when parts of the film can't reach the same octave its predecessor did.

Replacing Ryan Coogler at the helm is neophyte director Steven Caple Jr., a blossoming behind-the-camera maestro on many one-to-watch lists. The electrifying fight scenes alone, though, can't elevate this surprise-free sequel to the award-worthy stratosphere in the thick of Oscar season.

You can predict the story's roadmap and final destination within the first 15 minutes. Stallone does admirable work in his supporting role, but it's Jordan, once again, who steals the screen and makes every frame of this 130-minute, calculable cinematic cruise worth the admission price.

Creed 2 doesn't throw any unfamiliar punches, but I'll be damned if it doesn't land most of them.
