Being the last film released in Universal's Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection Blu-ray set, it's not surprising that this is their most polished. The creature's suit looks fantastic in b/w and the underwater shots were unheard of for their time. There's nothing surprising here - it's a straight-up #monster movie but one that was pulled off rather well. Recommended viewing for sure.
