Review of Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011) by Moviemew _ — 21 Jan 2018
"Crazy, Stupid, Love." combines a great cast with a great development of story, making it a really strong overall movie.
Now, mind you, cinematographically, it doesn't really stand out among other films; shots containing bright lighting have a standard bloom effect, which, if you know me, I absolutely detest, as it smears out details and whatnot. To this average cinematography, there are some exceptions, though. One panning shot in particular, wherein the protagonist can gradually be seen in different locations in the same room without there seeming to be any cutting, is one worth reminiscing about for its simple meticulousness.
Moving on, the story is very thought-out. Only when the movie comes to a climax nearing the ending, the viewer realises the gravity of character, plot line and inside-joke construction that's gone on during the entirety of the movie; this certain complexity, all whilst keeping information simple at all times, is very valuable. The single plot twist in that same convergence, is so well-incorporated and makes so much sense in hindsight that it really has a certain perfection to it.
Acting-wise, lastly, "Crazy , Stupid, Love." contains exquisite performances. Steve Carell, portraying the protagonist, really knows how to play the lowlife, obnoxious family-man: his supporting deuteragonist, Ryan Gosling - for once portraying a character with emotions and more than one full sentence to say - couldn't've been cast better as the classy, self-confident and seasoned womanizer. Dialogue between the two of them is cleverly written and delivered, once again emphasising the contrast between their personas. Throw a brisk Emma Stone and a dubious Julianne Moore into the mix, and you've got quite the spectacle; all actors have so much chemistry and personality, it's just great to watch them portray their ever-so-realistic roles.
Where I land on with this movie, is that it's remarkably well-written, with actors knowing how to convey the excellent writing. Definitely recommend it.
