Review of Country Strong (2010) by Steven D — 25 Jun 2011
Strong performances, good singing, and pleasant songs adrift in a sea of country music cliches. An alcoholic country singer is released early from rehab after falling drunk during a concert in Dallas and losing her baby.
Her husband and manager has planned a series of concerts in Houston, Austin, and Dallas to restart her career. The performances by the four leads (Gwyneth Paltrow, Garrett Hedlund, Leighton Meester, and Tim McGraw are good to very good.
The singing by the three non-professional singers (Paltrow, Hedlund, and Meester) is excellent. (The true country singer, MacGraw, sings not a note). Unfortunately, the performances are stranded in the middle of a disconnected set of vignettes that give the characters often confusing and downright conflicting motivations.
If you are going to build your movie out of plot elements borrowed from country songs, you would think that they would borrow from good country songs.
