Review of Country Strong (2010) by Dawdlingpoet — 28 Nov 2021
My first thought regarding this film is that I enjoyed the music, the live performances of contemporary country songs, more than I enjoyed the rather bleak plot being played out between such scenes. Compared to other films about country musicians who have had to come back from a bad place, this one wasn't the most substantial but its an alright film.
There are definitely some cliches at play and it did seem to me to be targeted as a 'chick flick' type of a film, which may or may not make it seem more of interest to you. I'd have liked to learn more about the main character, Kelly Canter, played by Gwyneth Paltrow - more about her background perhaps? I'm not sure but I didn't feel especially emotional about her, I suppose because I didn't feel a lot of details were given to the viewer about her.
While the songs are fun and enjoyable, its quite depressing seeing how Kelly acts around people, when away from the spotlight, so I wouldn't recommend this as a guaranteed feel good, uplifting kind of a film.
That aside, its an alright watch.
