Review of Cool Runnings (1993) by Johnny T — 26 Apr 2011
A cute, buoyant sports fantasy, jolted along by a reggae soundtrack and playfully acted by an appealing cast. A wholesome, engaging, frequently hilarious, ultimately inspirational film. The offbeat, fact-based saga is enlivened by the perfect balance of humor, emotion and insight and should be one of the true sleepers among fall box office releases. The setting and characters were so unique that the film quickly overcame its shortcomings to become a very satisfying piece of movie entertainment. The considerable warmth, humour and persistence of the cast soon have you rooting for these underdogs. Cool Runnings rises above its formulaic sports-movie themes with charming performances, light humor, and uplifting tone.
VERDICT: "Full Price" - My second highest rating (Positive to Mixed reaction). This is a rating to a movie I view as very entertaining and well made, and definitely worth paying the full price at a theatre to see or own on DVD. It is not perfect, but it is definitely excellent.
