Review of Cool Runnings (1993) by Netan Y — 21 Feb 2015
I have watched "Cool Runnings" about a thousand times. It is one of my favorite childhood movies. Based on the Jamaican Bobsled team that qualified for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, this movie is a joy to watch. The four bobsledders have excellent chemistry. Leon is very good in his lead role, as the team's leader who is determined to qualify for the Olympics. Doug E. Doug is hilarious as Sanka, providing plenty of one-liners. John Candy, as always, does an excellent job playing Irving Blitzer, the team's coach.
The movie is not very accurate about the actual events that occurred. It suggests that Jamaica did not have a bobsled federation at the time and the team did not have proper training. It also shows the Jamaican team receive a rude welcome when they arrive in Calgary. These are all false. "Cool Runnings" also wasn't a laugh-out-loud comedy, as most of the jokes were about the chilly weather these Jamaican athletes experienced in Canada. However, it is a motivational feel-good movie that provides entertainment for everyone in the family.
