Review of Conviction (2010) by Jc E — 25 Mar 2011
It's actually not that surprising that this movie didn't gain some traction last award season. Had it not been for the film's demeaning view of former Senate candidate Martha Coakley, it might have been better received by the lefties in Hollywood.
But I digress. This film is actually pretty good for a legal thriller set in Massachusetts. Given the apt talents of Hillary Swank (Amelia), Sam Rockwell (Iron Man 2), and Juliette Lewis (Due Date) - plus a couple of scenes with the newly minted Oscar winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter) - this film is a cut above many in its genre.
It's got some problems with the narrative, but the payoff is worth it, even if it does give a little too much credence to the idea that a lot of people behind bars are innocent. Granted, in a state like Massachusetts, who knows what kind of crooked things can happen.
