This is probably the most interesting movie I've seen in a while. It's hard to tell whether the split screen is just a gimmick or an actual idea. Sometimes it works extremely well and others its just a part of the movie.
It's hard to say if it's better when the viewer is aware of the split-screen working well or whether it just comes with the story. Never the less, it is a very good movie.
