Review of Contempt (1963) by Paul Z — 06 Aug 2008
Ridiculously, absurdly beautiful. Delerue's score, Coutard's camera, Godard's words, Piccoli's cool, Bardot's ass--clearly, this is one of Godard's, and thus the cinema's, towering achievements.
Godard even manages to make his arbitrary car crash effective by placing Bardot's chin on the outside of the passenger side door; it's an odd pose, quietly affective and genuinely moving. It's a shame that Godard felt like he had to disown his early work; it makes him seem impossibly arrogant.
Thankfully, there's no reason we have to reject them, too.
