Review of Contempt (1963) by Otto L — 31 May 2010
If the story would hold together and was as intense as the first part of it is, I would give 5 stars to this.. simply because it's so daunting and life-like.. it's painful to watch people having fights and how the love affairs ends..
It makes you think of how the relationships one has had follow the similar pattern: the syrupy I-love-you-so-much-and-can't-live-without-you stage will lead to a plateau and the possible "what the hell did I see in this person earlier?"..
The biggest pitfalls the movie has can be summed by the director's inability to connect the beginning and the end.. I'm willing to overlook this as the metatextuality of the film makes up for this.. the characters of the Ulysses and the movie become mixed (intentionally) and all in all, it's weird enough to raise the mood after the melancholic passive-aggressive fight scene..
In conclusion, the 4 stars is an average between the awesome 5-star parts and horrible boring parts..
