Review of Contempt (1963) by Benny B — 09 Sep 2012
The music is astounding! The film wouldn't fare half so well without it.
It's a very interesting character study, that offers few answers. Much better to me than Breathless, which kind of reeked of self-parody.
It's as though Camille is waiting for Paul to "get" something...which she herself doesn't understand.
Bardot is alluring. Her performance is fascinating. Palance is detestable.
Lang's speechifying is tedious every so often. Godard seems to think that abrupt editing is tantamount to cinematic depth. Every so often, the film is haphazard & distracting. Yet not detrimentally so. The film does betray a sense of scratching at the surface without ever exposing what's beneath it, unfortunately. There's no rhyme or reason. Perhaps the conveyance is exactly that .
