Review of Contempt (1963) by Jonathan S — 02 Jun 2010
The reason I write stuff about these films is to see how they change for me personally over time. I originally thought this was an okay film, interesting with the definite highlight of Bardot. Watching it now, I cannot say quite enough about it.
The films narrative and parallels to The Odyssey are fantastic. Knowing that the three main characters parallel those of that classic story blows my mind. The simplicity of shots and the way Godqrd capitalized on his tried and trusted techniques are amazing.
The fact that he got Fritz Lang to speak about Godard's own film techniques while performing is unspeakably brilliant. Put it this way. Can you imagine Coppola playing himself in a film yet espousing the virtues of Michael Bay as Bay directs Coppola? Genius.
And Bardot. Marilyn is more well known but Bardot was so much more in every way. God I want to make films as good as this, just like this!
