Contact is less of a quiet, brooding sci-fi thriller and more of an aspiring examination of science and religious experience. The core of Contact is full of rich thought and inquiry concerning the experiential aspects of God and religion against cold scientific data.

The heroine starts off merely being a person chasing after her dream, but in the process has the essence of self discovery shoved upon her, with Matthew McConaughey's character serving as a sort of emotional and religious anchor against her firmly devote scientific agenda.

Surrounding this phenomenon is a very slow movie that dawdles in the director's socially-driven vision of what would happen if contact was made with an alien civilization. Overall, despite the script and plot hitting scattered high notes and having a rich gooey center of religious inquiry, the movie just overall feels dull.

In order for any semblence of entertainment to be gleaned, the viewer must allow him/herself to experience and the lesson in morality and faith. Otherwise you will be caught in a very boring and tedious process.
