Review of Contact (1997) by Richard C — 03 Jun 2012
Beneath those doubting notions grounding you to reality is an impressionable, curious youth / human tucked away. We've all been fascinated and intrigued by forces higher than us, guided by Drake's Equation, hoping for communication at the universal level and at times it seems pointless to imagine something beyond us, but hope persists.
This engrossing science fiction account, which isn't AS far-fetched as a weaker film would've been, taps into the human subconscious, explores the possibilities of extraterrestrial finds, and publishes the findings.
I'd read that the screenplay was non-stop thrills, and indeed it is a well written piece which eclipses the conclusion, even; the journey is better than the destination. The science-vs.-religion component is handled pretty well, frustrating you at some points, and satisfying you at other times.
Jodie Foster's character is compelling, the science fiction research inspires you even if you don't entirely understand it, and the special effects are dazzling and complementary to the film's success.
