Review of Con Air (1997) by Quinten P — 02 Sep 2013
It's hard not to enjoy yourself watching this classic homage to the ridiculous, over-the-top action movies of the 80s and 90s. While Con Air is certainly not much more than a mindless pop corn action flick on the surface, it shines in its ability to seemingly poke fun at itself and other films of the genre such as the Die Hard and Lethal Weapon series.
As per usual with big budget action films at the time it's full of classic one liners, wise cracks and comebacks and will definitely leave you with several reasons to never take leading man Nick Cage's bunny out of it's box.
A film as zany and enjoyable as this could only have been made possible by the fantastic cast, including Ving Rhames, Steve Buscemi, Dave Chapelle, John Malkovich, Danny Trejo, John Cusack, Nick Cage and many more.
My few gripes with the movie, for what it is, are that the dialogue, shots cut between screaming bad guys and unnecessary explosions and Nick Cage's attempt at a southern drawl can get a little overbearingly cheesy and comical at times, but it is overall one of my favorite hair brained action romps of the 90s.
Is it a complex, realistic drama? No. Is it an enthralling thriller full of mind blowing twists and turns. No. It may not be any of these things but one thing it definitely is, which most movies nowadays seem to be less and less, is a hell of a fun time to watch and, in my eyes, it's a 4/5.
