Review of Compliance (2012) by Doctor S — 13 Nov 2013
A story that is very hard to believe, and chilling when you realize it actually happened. I had to research afterwards to verify the extent of abuse vested onto a fast-food worker by her employers under orders from a phonecaller who said he was a policeman, and remarkably the filmmakers stuck to the facts.
My question is, what do we gain by watching a movie version of this appalling carriage of injustice? Put in their shoes, we say "no" a dozen times, but never get a very clear understanding about why these people say "yes." Thus we are left with a point-by-point recreation like you'd see on the Investigation Discovery channel with better acting.
Compliance is well made and creditably not sensationalized, but ultimately I have to say my time was better spent reading about the case for a few minutes rather than uncomfortably watching it.
