Review of Compliance (2012) by Tony P — 21 Sep 2018
Shocking in parts, yet downright stupid in others so it seems.
Based on true events in many parts of the U.S. the film shows a fast food restaurant 'Chick Wich' undergoing a shocking incident.
The supervisor/manageress Sandra (Anne Dowd) receives a telephone call from an apparent police officer claiming that the young member of staff Becky (Dreama Walker) serving at the cash register has stolen money from a customer.
The film descends into farce as the identity of the caller isn't questioned as the phone call continues and the demands of the 'police officer' get more outrageous.
Sandra is asked by the caller to search Becky to find the money as no police officer is available to call personally at the restaurant.
Alarm bells continue to ring for the viewer at least as the search carries on into a full on (quite literally) strip search leaving Becky with only an apron to save her modesty.
Sandra takes the word of the caller without question it seems.
The restaurant is busy and requires colleagues to watch over Becky including males (as if) as Sandra is called away.
The film continues in this vein for a good hour until the hook of an apparent assault on Becky in her semi-naked state takes place by Sandra's fiance.
You get the sense of depravity watching such events occur until it transpires that this is not an isolated incident. Several similar incidents have occurred across the U.S. as I have mentioned already.
Towards the end of the film Sandra is interviewed by real investigators and I got the feeling that perhaps Sandra herself assaulted Becky?
Interesting film that really hasn't got a subject matter that I have heard of before.
The performances of the cast are quite good and elevate a typical B movie.
