Review of Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970) by Annick J — 07 Jan 2010
The highlight of this AI gone mad tale is seeing fellow canuck Gordon Pinsent take on the role of the president of the States. Seeing the Happy Days mom as a perky scientist also notable.
I've had to reassess this one. There was a skilled director's hand involved, clearly seen in the pretty modern feeling rythm, camera work and editing. The protagonist does go for a cool hand luke enamored with reason to an enraged man who realizes reason is not sufficient very methodically - the screenplay was clearly written with the intention of highlighting how this transformation comes about. Also, the AI's televised speech to the world was riveting.
Just don't let the totally unbelievable premise and somewhat stiff dialogue ruin the thoughtful and fairly competent effort at bringing a novella to the screen.
