There is little wonder that gems of bleak humor and originality are seen by so few people. While comparisons to Being John Malkovich and Charlie Kaufman in general are inevitable (and warranted) Cold Souls has its own character in Paul Giamatti.

When the plot stumbles, he's there to carry it. Giamatti is one of the rare actors who can speak volumes with one look, and much of this film's humor comes from such reactions. The conceit is dispensed with neatly, much like the removed souls, (and by David Straitharn no less), so rather than dwell on metaphysics the focus is on consequence.

At times the imagery feels manipulative, especially with Olga and the inevitable Malkovich-like tortured actor goes into himself scene, but that can be forgiven. When a film combines compelling ideas with entertaining contemplation and superb acting, it becomes something worth seeing, even if only by a few people.
