Review of Cold in July (2014) by Elijah L — 22 Aug 2016
Despite questionable plotting choices which make it feel like two movies in one, Cold in July is a satisfyingly dark and violent thriller. The third act feels so far removed from the rest of the film that you almost wonder if you accidentally switched over, but great music choices and a solid performance from Michael C. Hall keep Cold in July ticking over.
The one thing keeping me from giving Cold in July a solid 7/10 is the gaping plot hole of who Richard shot. The only reason Richard joined Jim's investigation was to discover who he'd actually shot, but the film apparently forgot about this in the third act, and this question was left unanswered. The film quickly turned into an (albeit very well done) revenge/vigilante justice flick without once referencing the events leading to it, nor resolving much of the plot.
