Review of Cold in July (2014) by Ray H — 10 Jun 2014
This is a very dark film noir. It has some positive elements. And, it was entertaining and engaging to watch. But, at it's core, the plot doesn't hold water. The lead character, Richard Dane (Michael Hall), is a mild mannered, picture framing business man. The plot sees him transformed into a semi-macho killing machine without a hint of any training or practice. And, more importantly, he heads down this path with no discernible motivation. He improbably decides to assist a very nasty guy who was terrorizing his family just days earlier. The plot did not wash. But, it did not matter very much. The movie was passably entertaining anyway.
The other two principal actors are Sam Shepherd, superb; and Don Johnson, who is serviceable. Those guys, along with Michael Hall, make the movie work and move forward. If you ignore the shaky plot line; this movie is worth a look. You can see it for the style, sound track, dialogue, and action; but not the plot.
It was an OK trip to the flics.
