Review of Code 46 (2003) by Maja M — 19 Aug 2007
This movie would have deserved a higher rating had the plot not left me yearning for more and feeling a bit empty. However, it was good, nonetheless, in terms of potential and concept.
The movie is set in the not-so-distant future, where globalisation has transcended beyond a mere semi-theory to become reality - a multicultural community with people speaking one global language (a mix of English, Chinese, Spanish, French, Indian, etc.). Yet, as cool as this may be, not all is well in this utopia - urbanization has left areas between great cities a desert wasteland, a place to be exiled to, a place so desolate you feel barren and lifeless as the desert. Genetics determines your place of residence and whom to marry - so much you can't help feeling suffocated by these restrictions.
The movie also has some really cool little scenes like having Mick Jones (the former member of The Clash) sing The Clash song "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" in a karaoke-club - not to mention a pretty good soundtrack.
I recommend the movie to sci-fi/indie aficionados.
