Review of Cloverfield (2008) by Jordan S — 21 Sep 2012
The calibur of monster movie Hollywood had tried to capture for so many years comes to fruition in Cloverfield. Taking cues from the Blair Witch, Cloverfield leaves you solely in the hands of a captivating cast that make you care as much for their own lives as you do for their survival.
The cause of New York's destruction is kept off camera as much as possible, and does so in a way that offers a satisfying bout of terror every time there's even a tremor in the distance. Cloverfield explains very little, modestly offering you only the account of a few residents, and it's enough to resonate and make you appreciate the subtlety.
