Review of Cloverfield (2008) by Stephen Z — 16 Feb 2015
The whole time I was watching "Cloverfield", all I could think was how much it felt like a video game. And I don't mean that as an insult because "Cloverfield" is actually quite good. The found footage first-person point of view works well for this film. The visual effects in this film are excellent. Though he isn't the director, you can definitely feel J.J. Abrams influence as producer. The first twenty minutes of setup is a bit slow, but once the Cloverfield monster arrives, things get really exciting. And actor T.J. Miller brings great comic relief to the film.
"Cloverfield" is a film made in the same spirit as classic monster movies. It is like the "Godzilla" of a new generation; both fun and terrifying at the same time.
