Review of Clockers (1995) by Daniel A — 26 Feb 2009
Nice ensemble piece by Mr Ensemble himself, Spike Lee. A murder mystery interlaced with the get-out-of-the-ghetto theme, ever popular in the 90s.
Mheki Phifer stars in an early role as one of the Clockers of the title and we see the impact his chosen trade has on the inhabitants of his neighbourhood; a nicely ambivalent performance from Harvey Kietel as a grizzled hardass, disgusted yet concerned about the community he polices, also proves a great strength. Not as nakedly polemical as earlier Spike Lee joints, this story interlaces its themes more artfully into a tense whodunnit narrative. Compelling.
