Review of Climates (2006) by Inez T — 13 Jan 2008
What is so striking about this film is not just the fact that it so brilliantly captures the banal nature of most relationships, but that it was written and directed by its male lead. Eloquently moving beyond, "It takes one to know one," Ceylan doesn't spare his character in his attempt to expose the rather trite nature of male longing and desire.
As other reviewers have noted, the cinematography here is stunning, as are the various locations featured in the film: Kas, Istanbul, and somewhere in Eastern Turkey that's miserably cold. Finally, the subdued acting gives the impression of having a sneak peak into the lives of strangers, evoking as it does the normalcy of love, loss, and everything in between.
If this is relationship drama Turkish-style, bring it on!
