Review of Clash by Night (1952) by Tim C — 04 Oct 2009
A bittersweet drama from 1952 that is the first to bring up underlying issues of marriage, gender roles, and individual fulfillment in context of such. Barbara Stanwyck plays a woman who returns from a disappointing city life to a fishing village and marries a simple fisherman, but is wooed by his best friend, played by Robert Ryan who is equally looking for happiness in all the wrong (?) places.
There is a strong, intelligent supporting performance by Marilyn Monroe in this film noir directed by Fritz Lang.
