Review of CJ7 (2008) by Dan G — 11 Apr 2009
Stephen Chow must be getting older to abandon all his physical antics in order to make this so-so piece of derivative family fluff. It's amusing enough but it's a wild disappointment for any who have seen and loved all or most of Chow's previous kung fu comedies.
The main thing that makes the movie stand out is the way it depicts Chow and his movie son as being so poor and destitute and yet they manage to entertain themselves and conquer despair in little ways like annihilating all the roaches in their home.
The movie succeeds in milking heartwarming content from this, where perhaps another film would have just fallen flat in the attempt and just come off as depressing. The alien critter in CJ7 is adorable and the effects for it are fairly well done, but in the end it's pretty much just an ET rip-off; only it's played for comedy rather than shameless heartstring tugging.
All in all this movie is fun but it is easily forgettable.
