Review of CJ7 (2008) by Dane P — 08 Jul 2014
The third movie in Chow's FX rampage. [He's like Jim Carrey who's become James Cameron.] I enjoyed it, I really did. But if I'm to be honest, I can't give it a high rating. It's not a family-friendly picture, it IS a FAMILY picture (aka kids & parents too).
I'm not in that demographic, so it's not meant to be my cup of tea. I can see the good aspects though. First, it's well made. There are moments of brilliance. Unfortunately I also see the bad and it's real simple: the tone is all over the place.
I know that's common in this culture but not so much anymore, and it's for the best by and large. Here there's Spielbergness, Shaolin/Hustleness, pathos..very mixed messages story-wise - it should've at least had a better story for a kid's movie.
The FX totally eclipse the story here. But it's still a must-see for first-generation Stephen Chow fans who now have kids the age of the boy in the movie (who is very good...and a girl!? holy jeez, bravo!!).
