Review of City of the Living Dead (1980) by Tristan P — 14 Mar 2009
Often dismissed as a 'dry run' for Lucio Fulci's similar The Beyond, City of the Living Dead is actually a great, terrifying film in it's own right. Fulci has never laid on the spooky atmospher thicker, and the film's feeling of dread steadily mounts until the nightmarish climax set in the creepiest underground crypt in movie history. The music is also highly effective, particularly the pulsing piece that plays over the climax.
The ending makes no sense, really, but the rest of the film is so perfect it doesn't really detract from the overall enjoyablity of the film.
