Lucio Fulci never fails to capture my heart in the ways of horror. When I first viewed this movie it was amongst friends during one of the few meetings of the Weird Film Society of St. Augustine. I had been exposed to a few Fulci films, but nothing compared to a gem like this. Although a lot of people bash this movie in favor of the classic zombie films and Fulci's "Zombi 2" this movie continued to capture my attention (which is very hard to do, considering that I have a mild case of ADD) from beginning to finish.

I adored the surreal aspect of the film. The fact that the undead weren't just your run of the mill, lumbering, moaning, and flesh eating zombies. They manipulated you both psychologically and physically. One long, cold stare from the hanging priest will make you regurgitate sheep entrails and bleed out of your eyeballs? I mean, come on, who doesn't want to see that. This movie also deprived me of sleep for a night, which I hate to admit. The thought of phantom killer spirits in my closet just chilled my spine.

This movie is really a treat to those few of us who enjoy sensationalistic, abstract, and avant-garde horror. It's not David Lynch, but it will make you think. I'm not even going to rate this one with stars. The Tomatometer thing says it all.
