Review of City of the Living Dead (1980) by Wk J — 23 Sep 2010
I have seen several Argentos, a couple of Bava, even a Lenzi, but only Zombi from Fulci until this one. And, out of all of them, even the abstract Argento movies, this one had me puzzled. I didn't get some of the story even though I know it wasn't too deep. But if I stopped to just enjoy the random shrieking or great gore effects, I keep trying to understand it all. And maybe that was my downfall for this movie.
The horror scenes are great in their creative gore or downright menace. The stares into the camera are great in this movie, especially like how I was watching it, after midnight in a quiet house. But I couldn't really fathom the story and just gave up and tried to not follow. Still, it was a drain on my enjoyment. But the shrill screaming out of nowhere throughout the movie did keep me on edge. Hope one of his others is better.
